School bus drops off 5-year-old miles from home
Source: The Buffalo News, N.儲存Y.Sept. 04--A 5-year-old boy's first bus ride home from school took a wrong turn Tuesday when he was dropped off in a South Cheektowaga neighborhood -- miles away from his Blasdell home and his Buffalo charter school."I don't know how in the world he ended up in Cheektowaga," Capt. James Speyer, a police department spokesman, said this morning.Town police were called Tuesday afternoon by a passerby who found the crying youngster walking the streets of Garden Village Apartments, located near French and Union roads. "He was so upset; we didn't know who he was," Speyer said. With the boy unable to communicate, police found paperwork in his backpack that led them to Community Charter School on Edison Avenue, which is near the Buffalo-Cheektowaga border. But when police called the school there was no answer, Speyer said, so they contacted someone in the transportation department of Buffalo Public Schools. The boy spent about two hours with police before they eventually heard from his mother. "Somebody got through to the mom -- we never did," Speyer said. The West Seneca School District is responsible fo新蒲崗迷你倉 the boy's transportation, according to Denise Luka, head of school at Community Charter School."We put the child on the bus he was supposed to get on," Luka said. Though the boy started kindergarten at Community Charter on Aug. 19, Tuesday was the first day he rode the bus, she said. The youngster should have been dropped off at Cambridge Square apartments in Hamburg, in the area of McKinley Parkway and Lake Avenue. But he inexplicably was discharged at Garden Village."The bus driver dropped the child off with no adult," which is illegal, Luka said.Mark Crawford, superintendent of the West Seneca School District, couldn't be reached to comment."My No. 1 priority ... is safety," said Luka. "I was speechless this morning when the mom came in." The boy's mother happens to be a school bus driver, she noted."There was a happy ending. It could've have ended very differently," Luka said."I'm thankful that the little fella is safe," Luka said.email: jhabuda@buffnews.comCopyright: ___ (c)2013 The Buffalo News (Buffalo, N.Y.)
