Mitchell Katine, lawyer in Lawrence v. Texas case, to speak here

Texas case, in which the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the nation's sodomy statutes, will deliver Saturday's keynote at the Stonewall Democrats of San Antonio 2013 Awards Banquet.Katine, who handles wide-ranging cases including those involving lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues, said the main theme of his speech will be, "Sometimes dreams come true," referring to recent strides in LGBT rights and the number of states approving same-sex marriage."But the subtopic in my talk is, 'Be careful what you wish for,' because people are getting the equity they want and find out that it comes with lots of responsibilities and obligations they didn't realize," he added."With marriage comes more permanency and commitment," he said. "You can't just walk away from a relationship."Earlier this week Katine was in a 儲存倉orpus Christi courtroom in the case of Nikki Araguz, the transgendered wife of a Houston firefighter killed on duty who was denied spousal benefits because she was born male.Katine said he's hopeful about the case. "You can never predict, but it went as well as oral arguments in the Lawrence case," he said.He said he's thrilled to be speaking in San Antonio, because of its recently approved non-discrimination ordinance.Katine said he has handled more than 100 adoptions for LGBT families. "I bring them all to San Antonio, because San Antonio judges are very accepting of gay families and gay adoption," he said.Saturday's banquet begins at 7 p.m. at the Hilton Palacio del Rio.
