Picture perfect day: Dillon keeps momentum, advances to semifinals

Source: The Montana Standard, ButteNov.迷你倉 10--DILLON -- Oh formalities, they must be dealt with. These early-round playoff football games seem to be just that to the Dillon Beavers' football team in recent years, but partake they must.Saturday at Vigilante Stadium, the Beavers played host to the Laurel Locomotives in a Class A state quarterfinal, where they derailed the train as they rolled over their guests 54-27 to advance to next week's semifinal round against the Belgrade Panthers at 7 p.m. on Friday. That game will also be played in Dillon. This win for the top-ranked Beavers was sparked by a game for the ages by their own Mick Paffhausen."I thought the kids were intense and focused, and it's always nice to get a couple of breaks like we did early and create a lot of opportunities," Dillon head coach Rick Nordahl said. "We were clicking on all cylinders, and that was nice to see."With the Beavers on track, the crowd settled in early sensing the team would earn the win they expected."We do enjoy winning and this community is one big family," Dillon senior Troy Scott said. "We have high expectations, and we come out playing every down like its our last and give it our all."Dillon came out on the game's opening drive and produced a healthy mix of pass and run as their line pulverized the Laurel defense.JD Ferris capped the drive with a 4-yard run at the 9:26 mark for a 6-0 Beavers lead. The Beavers stopped a successful first Laurel drive and took over. And did they ever take over.Again, using a mix of runs and a variety of pass plays, the Beavers marched down the field and scored on a Ferris to Troy Scott 13-yard scoring pass to make it 12-0 late in the opening quarter.Dillon's next score came on a Mick Paffhausen 85-yard punt return thanks to his wheels and some sweet blocks down field that led to an eventual 20-0 lead at the 8:33 mark.Seconds later Laurel would get a bit of a reprieve when Tyler Thompson flung a pass downfield that Jonah Oberg caught, and thanks to a Beaver coverage error, ran 65-yards later to make it 20-6.Of course Paffhausen thought that was enough, so on Dillon's next play he took a Ferris pass and flew down the field for a 70-yard touchdown pass play and a Dillon 27-6 lead eight minutes before halftime.Just under four minutes remained in the quarter when the Paffhausen show continued as he caught a 27-yard touchdown from Ferris and Dillon went up 33-6.But he and Ferris weren't done. After another big punt return, Paffhausen caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Ferris thanks to some Mr. Fantastic twists and turns to make it 40-6 with just under two minutes left in the half.Laurel scored late after some uncharacteristic Beaver defensive faux pas and Dillon settled for a 40-12 halftime lead. The second half saw Paffhausen add two more scores to his tally with another touchdown pass from Ferris and then a 38-yard interception return moments later to seal th文件倉 Dillon win.The Beavers would play a number of substitutes for a majority of the second half.Ferris would finish 11-for-13 for 220 yards and five touchdown passes, while Paffhausen caught four scoring passes for 130 of those yards. The Beavers rushed for 151 yards for about 5 yards per carry."That's the thing, we aren't hitting our receivers, spreading the ball around, and our line is clicking on the run blockers for the runners who are running hard," Nordahl said. "It was pretty picture perfect for our offense today."Paffhausen scored six of the nine times he touched the ball."The kid is one of the hardest workers I know and he deserved it," Nordahl said. "He created everything that he did today through hard work and dedication in the offseason. He's a tough son-of-a-gun. I couldn't be prouder of him."The senior made sure he shared the credit."We just had good blocking, everyone did their job and everything just opened up for me," Paffhausen said. "We come in every season hoping to win it all so we are disappointed if we don't ... we are disappointed in every touchdown we give up."That being said, Dillon will expect more from themselves next weekend in order to book passage to another state final game."I see 27 points on the board for their team, and we can't let that happen again," Paffhausen said. "We can't expect to put up 54 points a game."Laurel 0 12 8 7 -- 27DILLON 12 28 14 0 -- 541st QuarterD -- JD Ferris 4-yard run (kick failed), 9:26D -- Troy Scott 13-yard pass from Ferris (pass failed), 1:312nd QuarterD -- Mick Paffhausen 85-yard punt return (Ferris run), 8:33L -- Jonah Oberg 65-yard pass from Tyler Thompson (kick blocked), 8:19D -- Paffhausen 70-yard pass from Ferris (Payton Lafrentz kick), 8:00D -- Paffhausen 26-yard pass from Ferris (Kick blocked), 3:48D -- Paffhausen 16-yard pass from Ferris (Lafrentz kick), 1:17L- Brandon Kubitz 11-yard pass from Thompson (pass failed), :01.73rd QuarterD -- Paffhausen 17-yard pass from Ferris (Paffhausen kick), 9:49D -- Paffhausen 38-yard interception return (Lafrentz kick), 7:22L -- Muchael Buster 5-yard touchdown run (Thompson pass to Oberg), 3:234th QuarterL -- Cale Gulden 1-yard run (Connor Ludwig kick), 1:43Laurel Rushing -- Michael Buster 13-95, Jonah Oberg 8-25, Mitch Kaufman 9-72, Jordan Williams 1-2, Tyler Thompson 4-13, Caje Golden 3-35, Connor Ludwig 4-14; Dillon -Colton Riebe 12-83, JD Ferris 6-22, Jason Ferris 7-22, Tyler Van Slyke 3-14, MJ Simpkins 4-10, Dustin Cross 1-0.Laurel Passing -- Oberg 0-1-0-0, Thompson 3-11-1-77; Dillon -- JD Ferris 11-13-0-220, MJ Simpkins 3-4-22Laurel Receiving -- Oberg 1-65, Brandon Kubitz 2-12; Dillon -- MJ Simpkins 2-30,Troy Scott 3-36, Riebe 1-15, Mick Paffhausen 4-130, Brady Richardson 1-9, Trae Williams 3-22Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Montana Standard (Butte, Mont.)
