Boston 20, Detroit 4: Why the Tigers lost Wednesday

Source: Detroit Free PressSept.儲存 05--At Fenway Park, BostonWHAT HAPPENED: After there weren't any homers in the first two games of the series, the Tigers set a club record by allowing eight homers. David Ortiz hit two of those homers -- the 1,999th and 2,001st hits of his career. In between, he had an RBI double for his 2,000th hit.-- BOX SCORE-- OVERHEARD: "They're a really good club. It just got rolling tonight. We made bad pitch after bad pitch. Once they got hot, it got a little contagious, and it was one of their streaky nights." -- Tigers manager Jim Leyland.-- Mobile users: Photo gallery from the gameBLOWOUT DIMENSION: The Tigers' club record for homers allowed in a game was seven. They had done that four times, most recently in a loss to Texas at Comerica Park in 2007. The last time the Tigers allowed at least 20 runs was in a 26-5 loss to Kansas City at Comerica Park in 2004. The last time the Tigers gave up so many runs at Fenway Park was in a 23-3 loss in 1953.PORCELLO WALKS AWAY: Down 5-4, having allowed three homers, Rick Porcello walked home the first run in the sixth. Al Alburquerque relieved him and was g新蒲崗迷你倉eeted by a grand slam from Will Middlebrooks.-- OVERHEAD, PART II: "He missed with the slider. He was trying to go for a strikeout. He got behind him and threw a fastball." -- Leyland, on Alburquerque allowing the grand slam.FENWAY SPECIALS: The first three homers of the game all went down the rightfield line, and the two by Boston might not have been homers anywhere but Fenway Park. Stephen Drew curled a two-run drive around the foul pole, which stands only 302 feet from home plate. Prince Fielder's lead changing homer in the third also went past the pole; it might have been catchable at Comerica Park. Then Jacoby Ellsbury tied the game with a homer into the front row of the seats where they fall away at a sharp angle from the shallow rightfield pole. It probably would have been an out just about everywhere else.-- THREE STARS: 1. Ortiz; 2. Middlebrooks; 3. Drew (two-run homer to get all the scoring started).Contact John Lowe: jlowe@freepress.com.
