Knights get a positive result
Source: The Roanoke Times, Va.儲存Oct. 19--At some point in their educational journey, Cave Spring's football players may have learned that two negatives equal a positive. That was definitely the case Friday night as the Knights defeated visiting Pulaski County 17-10.Maybe the biggest play of the game began with Cave Spring facing a third-and-22 from its 9-yard line in the fourth quarter. A downfield heave by quarterback Alex Emery was picked off by Pulaski County defensive back Marcus Payne. However, as he was steaming toward the Knights' end zone, Payne lost control of the ball and his fumble was recovered by Cave Spring's Ty Albritton at the Knights' 23.Change of possession. First down Cave Spring."I think that really sealed the deal," Cave Spring coach Tim Fulton said. "They had to be feeling great about where they were [following the interception] and how unfortunate for them that we got the ball back."The Knights (4-4, 2-2 River Ridge) proceeded to pick up two first downs, one on a personal foul, before giving the ball back to the Cougars at their 35."This was an important win in that it pulls us back .500," Fulton said, "and any time you win going into an open week, it gives you a boost."Cave Spring scored two touchdowns in less than 90 seconds in taking a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter but the Cougars (4-4, 2-3) clearly were within range following a 32-yard Shane Chrisley field goal that made it 14-10 with 7:27 remaining in the third quarter. The Cougars rushed for 217 yards as a team but couldn't complete a pass when needed and had the ball for six offensive plays in the fourth quarter."We've got two more games left to play in the regular season and we've got to play them with passion and a sense of urgency," Pulaski coach Todd Jones said.Cougars' senior Quincy Rollins had rushed for a team-high 535 yards going into the game but Pulaski trailed 14-0 before his first appearance.Rollins rushed for 45 yards on Pulaski's 67-yard second-quarter touchdown drive but did not return. Jones said Rollins was hurt and turned to 5-foot-3, 135-pound junior Cody Semones.Knights junior John Roach carried 17 times for 101 yards and sophomore Tyler Ric迷你倉 had a 46-yard run to set up Cave Spring's second touchdown -- the eventual winning touchdown -- in the second quarter.Cave Spring's first touchdown followed an interception by 5-8 senior Sebastian Wellford, who returned it 30 yards to the Cougars' 5-yard line. It was the fifth career interception for Wellford, who clearly had the end zone in his sights."I wanted [a touchdown] pretty bad," said Wellford, who had been sitting on the route based on something he had seen in practice. "On most of the other ones, I'd just fallen down. This was my first long one."Wellford, an outstanding student who no doubt knows the rules about negatives and positives, was able to provide a quick assessment of the Knights' standing in the new VHSL playoff formula."Right now, out of 16 teams, we'd be the 15th team in the playoffs," he said. "So, it's really helped out. We were 15th going into tonight, so this solidified that spot. "Fulton blamed himself for not kicking a field goal before Emery was sacked on a first-half first-and-goal from the 2.On a fourth-quarter possession, he attempted a trick play that resulted in an incompletion on fourth-and-13."How can I put this?" Fulton said. "You do some things to try to win ballgames. I'd have to admit it looked a little raggedy there."Pulaski County 0 7 3 0--10Cave Spring 7 7 3 0--17CS -- Roach 5 run (Seymour kick)CS -- Albritton 5 pass from Emery (Seymour kick)PC -- Johnston 1 run (Chrisley kick)PC -- Chrisley 34 FGCS -- Seymour 32 FGPC CSFirst downs 12 16Yards rushing 217 185Passes C-A-I 2-7-2 10-17-2Yards passing 24 89Penalties-yards 6-58 4-30Fumbles-lost 1-1 3-1Punts-average 3-38.3 2-29.0Individual statisticsRUSHING -- Pulaski County, Jones 10-74, Johnston 18-55,Rollins 5-45, Semones 6-41, Alley 8-2.
