Country music singer Sam Riggs excited for upcoming show at Hurricane Harry's
Source: The Eagle, Bryan, TexasJan.迷你倉出租 23--When Austin singer-songwriter Sam Riggs shot a video for his 2013 single When the Lights Go Out, he called upon his own rodeo experience from his high school days. The clip weaves bull-riding scenes with a brooding relationship plot. There was one problem."I sucked at it then," he says of his riding ability, "and I sucked at it in the video."Riggs describes a brutal scene: The bull -- as bulls tend to do -- threw him. Riggs landed awkwardly, then scrambled to get away. But one of the bull's hind legs landed on his shoulder blade, he says. He credits his protective vest, and says he was lucky to escape without broken bones (just several days of pain)."It definitely left a mark," he says with a laugh. "... It was pretty outrageous. But I wanted people to be able to connect with it. I have this thing about realness. I'm not going to hire a stunt man to get on this bull. I want to ride it."Riggs and his band, the Night People, open for Casey Donahew Band on Friday at Hurricane Harry's. Riggs hails from St. Cloud, Fla., and moved to Austin in 2007 in pursuit of music. He chose Austin over Nashville, and two things nudged him that way: A cousin enrolled at Texas A&M, and a friend passed along a CD by Austin band Reckless Kelly."What I wanted my songwriting to be was reflected more in that than a lot of stuff I was hearing out of Nashville," he says. "That's kind of what swayed me to move out here."The reception for When the Lights Go Out was encouraging, Riggs says, all bull-bucking blunders aside. It hit No. 1 on CMT's fan-vote show, Pure 12-Pack Countdown, which Riggs calls "the most flattering thing in the world."Riggs released his first full-length album, Outrun the Sun, in October. The band had already been performing the songs on the road, but producer Erik Herbst suggested a "rounding of the edges in order to do what you really want to do with this record," Riggs recalls. The result, he says, was a record that turned out better迷你倉than he had imagined."I don't say that to sound arrogant," Riggs says. "I really had no idea it was going to take that good of a turn. I attribute a lot of that to Erik Herbst. ... The response has been overwhelmingly positive."As for his band's name, the Night People comes from Riggs' musical mentor, Ray Wylie Hubbard. The longtime singer-songwriter -- whose song Up Against the Wall Redneck Mother was a standout of the "cosmic cowboy" movement in the 1970s -- turned the phrase in his 2006 song Rabbit: "There's two kind of people in the world/The day people and the night people/And it's the night peoples' job/ ... To get the day peoples' money."Though Riggs jokes that Hubbard merely "tolerates me," he credits the veteran artist for teaching him "what it really means to be a songwriter.""He would tell me, 'You can't afford anything less than great -- and this song isn't great,'" Riggs says. "And so I'd re-examine it, and take that hard-edged constructive criticism. He has this thing, 'When you cut your lyrics, they're supposed to bleed. They're supposed to be living lyrics that tell a story for ages to come.' He also told me, 'Be careful about the songs you write. Think about 30 years down the road. Are you still going to want to be singing this song? If not, don't put it out.'"Riggs has performed in Bryan-College Station several times, but says he has more memories "on the crowd side of the stage," especially in the Texas Hall of Fame's heyday. His show on Friday is his first at Hurricane Harry's."I've always wanted to play Hurricane Harry's," he says. "... I'm super excited. It's a big stage, it's a cool club. It's always been one of those places all my buddies got to play, and I never got the opportunity to play it. I feel like it's a place full of synergy between the band and the crowd, and I'm anxious to get into that."Copyright: ___ (c)2014 The Eagle (Bryan, Texas) Visit The Eagle (Bryan, Texas) at .theeagle.com Distributed by MCT Information Servicesmini storage
